Happiness Index Up or BUST by Darren Goodman

The U.S. economy has been on a steady path of recovery, but Americans aren’t getting any happier. Only one in three Americans say they’re very happy, according to a recent Harris Poll.

The online poll of 2,345 U.S. adults, conducted last month, used a series of questions to determine American’s levels of contentment and life satisfaction. Overall, just 33 percent of Americans said that they were very happy, remaining consistent with happiness levels in 20ll but dropping from the 35 percent who reported being very happy in 2008 and 2009. According to Huffington Post  on June 01, 2013.

I find it amazing that

In the ruins of the "Great Recession", people were still happier in 2008 than now.
Seven years later and 66 percent of people are unhappy. This raises many questions concerning the direction of our country, personal responsibility and capital used to restart America. Maybe, with the integration of a global economy we are feeling the trimmers of greater changes.

Whatever it maybe, deep in the Huffington Post article I found a ray of hope. First, stress levels generally decreased with age. Second, the poll revealed Americans over the age of 50 are more likely to be very happy than those in their 30’s and 40’s. Third, Americans are less likely than ever before to view wealth as a necessary ingredient to a happy life. Could it be that we are coming back to reality regarding the origins of happiness being somewhere other than in your wallet? Are we starting to understand a deeper level of life and it purpose? Or, are Americans getting tired of our leaders making promises they simply cannot keep?
